History of the Sangamon Ordinance Plant to be Presented

  • September 20, 2016
  • 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
  • Tri City Library, 600 South Main St. Buffalo

A history, impact and legacy of the Sangamon Ordinance Plant will be the focus of the Sangamon County Historical Society program at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 20 at the Tri City Library, 600 South Main St. in Buffalo.

Traces of the World War II bomb manufacturing complex, a factory city that rose virtually overnight on 20,000 acres of prime Illiopolis farmland in the early 1940s, have almost faded into history and view, but the plant's long-range effects remain. During its operation the plant employed nearly 10,000 individuals, most of them women, and helped pull the Springfield and Decatur areas out of the economic doldrums created by the Great Depression.

The program will include parts of a PBS television’s “Prairie Fire” documentary produced and hosted by Emmy Award winning television producer Alison Davis Wood as well as rare photos, articles, memorabilia, printed materials, and commentary.

For more information about the event, contact the Sangamon County Historical Society at www.sangamonhistory.org or 217-525-1961. The event is free and open to the public.
